Ik heb nooit eerder iets van Elizabeth Hunter gelezen. Semi-Psychic life is deel 2 van de Glimmer Lake serie, maar hij zou los te lezen moeten zijn. Ik lees hem dan ook los en hieronder lees je of het echt los te lezen is.

Schrijfstijl
Ik moest even wennen want Elizabeth Hunter schrijft vanuit de derde persoon. Dat lees ik amper en ik moest even wennen. Maar de schrijfstijl is zo fijn, dat ik er eigenlijk binnen 2 pagina’s aan gewend was. Het voelt alsof je kijkt naar Val en haar leven. Het is grappig geschreven en je voelt je meteen verbonden met de wereld en het personage. Ik vond het een heerlijke schrijfstijl.
Dit is mijn eerste ARC van Social Butterfly. Ik kende de auteur nog niet, maar ik zag een oproepje in hun facebookgroep en raakte geïntrigeerd door de flaptekst. Het klonk echt enorm grappig.
Dit boek is echt niet super PNR. Eigenlijk is het bijna een normale romance/detective achtig iets. Het enige verschil is dat de hoofdpersoon en haar 2 vriendinnen af en toe helderziende ervaringen hebben. Alle drie op een andere manier. Val is een supercoole vrouw van net in de 40 met 2 tienerzoons. Een doorsnee alleenstaande moeder die hard werkt in haar koffiezaakje. Ze heeft leuk personeel, leuke en minder leuke klanten en probeert haar leven zo goed en zo kwaad mogelijk door te zeilen met haar half afwezige ex.
Het hele verhaal is op zo’n droge en humoristische wijze geschreven. Val moet op zoek naar haar ex, die ineens van de aardbodem is verdwenen na een halfslachtige voicemail en de politie die hem zoekt. Samen met haar vriendinnen gaat ze op onderzoek uit.
Stel je een vrouw voor die net in de veertig is, haar haar aan de zijkanten heeft opgeschoren en paars geverfd en in het midden een lange bruine lok. Daarbij is ze ietwat stevig, eigenaar van een koffiewinkel, sinds kort kan ze vet onhandig haar handen ergens op leggen en hele visioenen krijgen. Ook als ze de was doet van de kleding van haar zoons. Oftewel, Val draagt vaak handschoenen, want veel wil je echt niet weten van anderen. Niet zoveel in ieder geval. Het is hectisch en herkenbaar (zonder dat hele psychic gedoe).
Ik heb echt genoten van dit boek en het was in anderhalve dag uit. Geweldig. Ik wil echt vaker nog iets van deze auteur lezen.

Writing Style
I had to get used to it because Elizabeth Hunter writes from the third person. I hardly read that so it took some time. But the writing style is so nice that I was used to it within 2 pages. It feels like you are looking at Val and her life. It is written with a lot of jokes and funny stuff and you immediately feel connected to the world and the character. I thought it was a wonderful writing style. I sure want to read more of it.
This is my first ARC from Social Butterfly. I didn’t know the author yet, but I saw a call in their facebook group and got intrigued by the blurb. It sounded really funny.
This book really isn’t super PNR. Actually it is almost a normal romance / detective like thing. The only difference is that the main character and her 2 friends occasionally have clairvoyant experiences. All three in a different way.
Val is a super cool woman in her 40s with 2 sons. A teenager and a middle scholer. She’s an average single mother who works hard in her coffee shop. She has nice staff, nice and less nice customers and tries to sail her life as good as possible with her half absent ex.
The whole story is written in such a dry and humorous way. Val has to find her ex, who has suddenly disappeared from the face of the earth after a half-hearted voicemail and the police is looking for him. She goes to investigate with her friends.
Imagine a woman in her early forties, having her hair shaved on the sides and dyed purple, and a long brown strand in the middle. In addition, she is somewhat sturdy, owner of a coffee shop. Since recently she gets visions when she puts her hands on an object that belongs to someone. Even when she does the laundry of her sons’ clothes. In other words, Val often wears gloves, because you really don’t want to know much about others. Not that much anyway. It is hectic and recognizable (without all the psychic stuff).
I really enjoyed this book and I finished it in a day and a half. Awesome. I really want to read something from this author more often.
